SUMMARY:History of Sodaville
DESCRIPTION:OLD-TIMERS SHARE THE STORY OF SODAVILLE \nJulie Grunberg and JaDala Doyle will present a program about the history of Sodaville on Wednesday\, May 10\, at the Lebanon Public Library. The program will begin at 3:00 p.m. and last for about an hour. \nBoth Grunberg and Doyle grew up in Sodaville. Doyle’s great-grandfather was the probably the first white person to taste the mineral water from the town’s famous spring\, around which a resort developed. Grunberg became a de facto town historian when she inherited her father’s book of photographs\, essays\, and news clippings about Sodaville. \nSponsored by the Lebanon Museum Foundation and the Lebanon Public Library\, this program is open to the public and free for all. The library is at 55 Academy Street.

SUMMARY:THE SANTIAM WAGON ROAD A - Presentation by Tony Farque
DESCRIPTION:Local Archaeologist and historian Tony Farque will tell the story of the Santiam Wagon Road. Sponsored by the Lebanon Museum along with the library\, the program is open to all and free of charge. Audience members are welcome to bring a lunch to eat as they listen. \nThe longtime archaeologist for the Sweet Home Ranger District\, Tony Farque is beloved for his guided hikes and lively presentations on topics such as Cascadia Cave\, the Civilian Conservation Corps\, and the history of the U.S. Forest Service in the Willamette National Forest. Farque spoke about the Kalapuya in the Lebanon Museum’s kickoff program in 2018. \nThe Santiam Wagon Road was created after Lebanon-area settlers\, following Indian trails\, discovered the Santiam Pass. Local ranchers formed a corporation to develop a toll road to carry their livestock to pastures across the Cascades. For more than 70 years\, until Highway 20 was completed\, the Santiam Wagon Road was the main means of transportation through the central Cascades. It carried not only flocks of sheep and herds of cattle but wagon trains full of wool\, stagecoaches full of vacationers\, and even automobiles—most famously in 1905\, when one of the two competitors in a transcontinental race tied a log to his car to slow its descent down Seven-Mile Hill. \nFarque’s presentation will be the first in the Lebanon Museum’s 2020 series of historical programs. Others will be announced through the year.

SUMMARY:Pictorial History of Lebanon's Mills
DESCRIPTION:NEWS RELEASE \nFor immediate release: July 30\, 2019 \nMUSEUM PRESENTS PICTORIAL HISTORY OF LEBANON’S MILLS \nOn Thursday\, August 22\, the Lebanon Museum Foundation will present the third of its 2019 public programs on local history. Jeff Smith\, a longtime resident and steward of Lebanon’s history\, will show photos of Lebanon’s mills during their heights of production. The program will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Lebanon Public Library\, 55 Academy Street. The event is open to the public and free for all. \nSmith collected the photos from the archives of the Lebanon Express and John Eggen\, who operated Eggen Photography Studio in Lebanon until he retired in 1977. Smith’s presentation will provide glimpses of the men and women who worked in the mills and a perspective on the mills’ impacts on the Lebanon community and the world. \nBy boosting interest in local history\, this program is intended to raise support for the Lebanon Museum\, which has a growing collection in storage at the Lebanon Public Library but so far no display space. Last fall the museum’s kickoff program featured a talk on the Kalapuya by Tony Farque\, an archaeologist for the U.S. Forest Service. Two programs this year featured stories of growing up in Lebanon\, told by Ken Bolf\, Sally Morgan\, and Tony Hayden\, and Bob and Betty Adams’ relics and reminiscences from the pharmacy they owned on Main Street. \nFor more information about the Lebanon Museum Foundation and its programs\, visit the website at https://lebanonmuseum.org\, find LebanonMuseum on Facebook\, or send a message to info@lebanonmuseum.org. \n#####

SUMMARY:Lebanon Pharmacy History - Bob & Betty Adams
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, June 12\, the Lebanon Museum Foundation will hold the second of its 2019 local history programs. Bob and Betty Adams\, former owners of Adams Pharmacy in Lebanon\, will tell tales of their 27 years of running the downtown drugstore and display pharmaceutical relics that they inherited with the store. The program will take place in the back room (the old Lebanon Hotel dining room) of the Lobby\, 661 South Main St.\, at 2:00 p.m. This event is open to the public and free to all. \nThe Adams Pharmacy was in the Donaca Building\, owned by the Masons\, who had their lodge upstairs (the building is now undergoing renovation). Bob Adams was the pharmacist\, Betty Adams served as bookkeeper and gift buyer\, and “older ladies” worked at the soda fountain. Because a Rexall drugstore had been in the building or the one next door since the 1880s\, the Adams found a lot of antiquated supplies and equipment when they started their business. These items tell fascinating stories about the development of the pharmacy trade\, both in general and in Lebanon in particular.
